Ammoru (1995) Description
Big-budget Bollywood hit with a strong mythological strain - and one of the first Indian films to incorporate CGI. A young girl evokes the goddess Ammoru to save her from the clutches of an evil magician
Three years in the making and featuring some dazzling special effects, this Telugu-language release blends love, murder, spirits and revenge into a wild tale of divine intervention.
In a spectacular overture, the goddess Ammoru (Krishna) comes into being. Thereafter the plot follows devotee Bhavani (Soundarya) as she tries to escape magician Gorakh (Reddy). It's an intricate weaving of legend and more traditional Bollywood concerns, and Bhavani is forced to endure an attempt on her life and the death of her child until the goddess descends to Earth in a blaze of glory to wipe out Gorakh, and a few others besides.
A series of traditional folk tales is interspersed in the narrative, accompanied by some blazing song-and-dance numbers. It's notable for its high production values and the finale is a spectacular mix of traditional Bollywood extravagance and up-to-the-minute technical expertise.
Verdict
Delirious Bollywood (or, more accurately, Tollywood) release that blends conventional storytelling with a fantastical tale of cosmic combat. Irresistible.
